Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the dentistry specialty that takes care of preventing and correcting uneven position of the teeth, abnormal bite and jaw position. Currently there is a substantial percentage of the population with dental malocclusion that requires the correction with braces.
Nowadays, healthy and aligned teeth together with an attractive smile play an important role in social relationships and are life lasting attributes. They represent youth, dynamism, success, stronger self-esteem and confidence and an optical presentation letter that creates a better impression when you meet new people.
A good orthodontics treatment will allow you to enjoy a nice smile and a healthy mouth but it is NOT enough if it does not come accompanied by a correct daily oral hygiene regime.
Following your dentist advice and use of the appropriate products, will guarantee the success of the treatment: teeth alignment that will enable a better hygiene and a healthier mouth in the mid – long term.

Orthodontics

When your dentist perceives the need to correct the teeth alignment to solve the malocclusion problems, he/she usually recommends an orthodontic treatment.

There is not a specific age to use braces. However, if the treatment starts at an early age, the final result will be faster and less expensive. In an adult’s mouth, the jaw structure and facial bones are already firmly positioned. Therefore the final result is slower.

There are a variety of problems that can be relieved or decreased with an orthodontics treatment, some examples are: misaligned, crooked or stacked Teeth, overbite, incorrect position or deviation of the jaw, disorders in the maxillary articulation.

Orthodontic treatments can be undertaken with removable or fix appliances.

  • The removable appliances are the ones that are adjusted to the patient’s profile and can be removed at any time. If a patient is wearing removable appliances, the daily oral hygiene should be the same as the one for a person not wearing appliances. Removable appliances only require additional hygiene to fight the dental biofilm build up.
  • Fix appliances are those that are attached to the dental surface with resins and tighten to each other with a metal arch. In the fix appliances, the strength applied on the arches moves the teeth very precisely to the required position. Those wearing fix appliances must pay special attention to their oral hygiene as they can suffer from the most common problems such as dental biofilm build up, enamel demineralization, bad breath, etc.
Due to these factors, a thorough oral hygiene is necessary:
    • Using specific products for orthodontic appliance wearers
    • And, always remembering the interproximal cleaning.

What measures should I consider when wearing orthodontic appliances?

  • Brush your teeth after every meal and before going to bed.
  • Avoid hard food, such as nuts, almonds, toasted bread or seeds.
  • Avoid chewing gum, nougat, candy or similar food.
  • Be careful with apricot, cherry or olive seeds.
  • Avoid cutting food with your teeth. Use knife and fork to cut food in small pieces.
  • Do not bend the appliances with your fingers.

The appliances help you have aligned and attractive teeth. You only need to worry about keeping your teeth and gums clean. For the orthodontic treatment, VITIS offers a complete range of products, VITIS Orthodontic, specifically designed for the care and protection of teeth and gums.
