Care of interproximal spaces
Some diseases are the consequence of the building up of dental biofilm bacteria in the spaces between the teeth. It is very important to perform a thorough interdental hygiene routine. The maintenance of a healthy mouth is based on the control of dental biofilm.
What is dental biofilm?
The dental biofilm is a sticky and colourless layer, formed by bacteria, that is continuously building up which sticks on the tooth surface, the edges of the gums and the interproximal spaces (the space between teeth).
The interproximal spaces (between teeth) offer the environment that facilitates the development and building up of dental biofilm. For that reason we need to pay special attention to eliminate it and also to clear the food debris that settles in the spaces between teeth. It is strongly recommended to use interproximal toothbrushes for the open spaces and dental floss for the more closed spaces.
Gingivitis, periodontitis and caries are some of the most common pathologies due to accumulation of dental biofilm.
Dental biofilm build up is a continuous process that attacks teeth even after tooth brushing. This is why it is recommended to carefully brush your teeth after every meal and before going to bed, leaving no spaces without maximum cleaning. Therefore it is important:
- To brush your teeth regularly, according to your needs.
- To use Vitis toothpaste and Vitis mouthwash to maximise hygiene.
Getting into good oral hygiene habits will allow you to enjoy the benefits of good oral health.
How to get rid of dental Biofilm?
The use of a regular toothbrush does not eliminate the dental biofilm at interproximal level because those spaces are difficult to reach. Before using any products for the cleaning of interproximal spaces, we need to distinguish between open and closed interproximal spaces so that we can select which cleaning mechanism is the most suitable in each case.
Dental floss and interproximal spaces adapt to all kinds of spaces.
The closed interproximal spaces are those with very thin or nonexistent space between teeth. In these areas, the use of dental floss helps eliminate the interdental biofilm around the gum line, thus preventing caries and periodontal disease.
The open interproximal spaces can be the result of losing one tooth or an exaggerated separation of the teeth, amongst other reasons. For these problems there is a solution: The Interprox® toothbrush range that enables an efficient cleaning of these spaces.
