Evaluation of Cetyl-Pyridinium Chloride Formulations In Orthodontic Patients: Orthodontic-related Outcomes.
The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to assess the effects of the use of a cetyl-pyridinium chloride (CPC) toothpaste and mouth rinse in patients wearing orthodontic appliances on dental and orthodontic outcomes.
70 patients were randomly assigned to brush and rinse with placebo or test products (Vitis Orthodontic, Dentaid®). After screening, control (n=31) and experimental (n=32) patients received a baseline examination and a prophylaxis. They were re-assessed monthly for 3 months. At each visit, the following variables were recorded: number of de-bonded braces and bands, presence of mucosal injuries, caries and white spots on enamel surfaces. Standardized photographs of the anterior teeth were taken to evaluate staining. Compliance and taste were assessed by a filled questionnaire at 1, 2 and 3 months. These variables were compared
using unpaired and paired t-test, or non-parametric tests. Chi-square test was used to compare the outcomes from the questionnaires.
After 3 months, results from 23 placebo and 27 test patients were available. No differences were found in the number of de-bonded brackets or bands between groups. Presence of new caries, white spots or mucosal injuries was also not significantly different. The intensity and area of tooth staining remained low in both groups throughout the study, but slightly higher in the lower arch compared to the upper arch. Differences were not significant. After one month, placebo and experimental patients did not show significant differences for the six-answer questionnaire. After two and three months, only one answer related to the taste was significantly different. The experimental mouthrinse showed a slightly better and stronger taste than the placebo.
Conclusion: The use of CPC-based toothpaste and a mouthrinse did not demonstrate adverse effects on the appliances, mucosa or tooth staining in young orthodontic patients. Supported by Dentaid S.L. (Spain).
