Orthodontics
Orthodontics is the dentistry specialty that takes care of preventing and correcting uneven position of the teeth, abnormal bite and jaw position. Currently there is a substantial percentage of population with dental malocclusion. That need orthodontic treatment. Healthy and aligned teeth and an attractive smile play an important role in social relationships and are life lasting attributes. They represent youth, vitality, success, stronger self-esteem and confidence and make a good impression when you meet new people.
An optimal orthodontic treatment will allow you to enjoy a nice smile and a healthy mouth, although this is NOT enough if it is not accompanied by correct daily oral hygiene. Following your dentist's advice and using the appropriate products, guarantee treatment success: teeth alignment that will enable better hygiene and a healthier mouth in the mid - long term.
When your dentist perceives the need to correct tooth alignment to solve problems of malocclusion, s/he usually recommends orthodontic treatment. There is no specific age to use braces. However, if treatment starts at an early age, the final result will be achieved more quickly and will be less expensive. In an adult's mouth, the jaw structure and facial bones are already firmly set. Therefore the final result is slow it takes longer to see the results.
There are a variety of problems that can be solved or lessened with an orthodontic treatment; some examples are: misaligned, crooked or stacked teeth overbite, incorrect position or deviation of the jaw, maxillary articulation disorders.
Orthodontic treatments can be done with removable or fixed appliances:
- Removable appliances are the ones that adapt perfectly to each individual patient and can be removed at any time. If a patient is wearing removable appliances, daily oral hygiene should be the same as it is for a person not wearing appliances. Additional hygiene is only needed to fight dental biofilm build-up.
- Fixed appliances are those that are attached to the dental surface with resins and to each other with a metal arch. Fixed appliances apply pressure to dental arches, making teeth move to a very precise position.
Those who wear fixed appliances must pay special attention to their oral hygiene to avoid problems that are commonly caused by orthodontic treatment: dental biofilm build-up, gingivitis, enamel demineralization, bad breath, etc.
For this reason, thorough oral hygiene is necessary:- Using specific products for orthodontic appliance wearers
- And, always remembering to clean interproximally
What should I keep in mind when wearing orthodontic appliances?
- Brush your teeth right after every meal and before going to bed
- Do not eat hard food, such as nuts, almonds, toasted bread or seeds
- No not chew gum, nougat, candy or similar food
- Be careful with apricot, cherry or olive seeds
- Do not cut food with your teeth. Use knife and fork to cut it in small pieces
