Halitosis, sets tongues wagging
March 13

The 1st European Symposium on Halitosis was supported by Halita®, the first scientific treatment for the control of Oral Halitosis.

The origin, diagnosis and treatment of halitosis has been the focus of lectures by leading national and international experts in the field of Oral Health.

"Halitosis can cause psychological alterations that lead to social isolation", "its prevalence is between 20-40% in adult populations", "bad breath, contrary to popular belief, does not originate in the stomach, but rather in the mouth"; these are some of the conclusions that were reached during the 1st European SEPA Symposium on Halitosis.

Dr. Silvia Roldán, Dr. Marc Quirynen and Dr. Edwin Winkel, experts in Halitosis, were the main speakers at this event, which gathered over 200 sector professionals. The main ideas of the meeting included the importance and prevalence of halitosis, its classification and the associated causes.

The Symposium, which was organised by the Spanish Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration, and sponsored by Halita®, the first scientific treatment for the control of Oral Halitosis, focused on updating knowledge on the treatment of halitosis, a condition that  besides having significant social and psychological impacts, can also be related to other diseases (particularly, periodontal disease).

Halitosis: a complex, but reversible, problem

Thorough treatment of halitosis, a complex, although reversible, problem. Halitosis is expressed as a set of unpleasant odours that emanate from the oral cavity. A third of the population has this problem, which can cause social consequences that in turn can seriously affect quality of life. Its diagnosis is complicated, because those who have it are not always aware of the problem until other people point it out.

In 90% of all cases, the main cause lies in the oral cavity, and is due to the accumulation of bacteria on the tongue dorsum, gums and between teeth, which produce foul-smelling gases, particularly when retained for some time in the mouth. For this reason, proper daily oral hygiene is essential, including not only cleaning teeth, but also cleaning the tongue, gums and interproximal spaces.

The origin of the remaining 10% can be nasopharyngeal, gastric or systemic (caused by diseases such as diabetes or liver or lung diseases).

DENTAID covered the entire Symposium on its social media platforms.
