Oral hygiene in patients wearing orthodontic appliances
Children wearing fix orthodontic appliances require special attention, as they are exposed to a higher risk of caries and gums disease.
Children wearing removable appliances should clean their teeth and the appliances with the same frequency. The best results when cleaning removable appliances are obtained when using a hard bristles toothbrush.
It is important to inform parents and patient that hygiene of removable appliances should be done carefully. If too much pressure is applied on the appliances, the hooks might be altered and the attachment can be damaged and occlusion can be affected.
For fix orthodontic appliances, using a specific toothbrush is advisable. These include a groove in the central area that facilitates the cleaning of the brackets.
The one-crest toothbrush can be used to clean the interproximal area and the area surrounding the fix appliances.
