Tooth parts
Enamel: It is the surface of the tooth, is in contact with the mouth cavity, is the most mineralized tissue of the organism, and it contains high levels of calcium. The mineral content in the temporary teeth is smaller than in the permanent teeth. This is why they absorb fluorine better.
Dentine: It is located under the enamel. It is slightly harder than the bone and softer than the enamel. It has an elastic quality that favours the proper operation of the tooth, since it grants the necessary flexibility to avoid the fracture of the fragile underlying enamel.
Pulp: It contributes nerves and arteries necessary for the tooth, contains cells that mediate the response to the aggressions from the outside as the attack of bacteria.
Cement: Tissue that covers the roots of the dental pieces. Its main function is to serve as an anchorage to the root of the teeth.
Periodontal ligament: Connects the teeth to the bone.
Alveolar bone: It is part of the jawbone where teeth are sheltered. Its existence depends on the presence of the teeth and its development happens simultaneously with the formation and eruption of the teeth; this bone suffers atrophy when teeth are lost.
